Digital Abstract Art by Mark LaRiviere painter and photographer

City Rain Series

In August 2018, I began a project to rework several pieces from my digital print portfolio with the aim of interpreting them in new ways. I have always been intrigued by how re-cropping can create very different visual narratives, whether it’s a photograph, a drawing from imagination, or something in between.

This project began with a photograph I took from a NYC taxi window on a rainy evening as the city’s lights began to flicker on for the night. Headlights, tail lights, and traffic lights reflected off the rain-slicked streets and were distorted by the drops accumulating on the taxi window.

The photo itself is quite ordinary at first glance. However, it transformed dramatically when I started manipulating and distorting it using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The initial version of the image underwent several alterations, leading to a vibrant display of fiery colors flowing like a lava stream into a cool sea. The twenty variations of the image are available as either vertical or horizontal compositions, printed using a sublimation process onto thin metal plates.
